I love the holiday season. People seem to open their hearts and be willing to give what they can to help others out. In the spirit of the season I’d like to talk this week about free tutoring services that are offered.
Free tutoring services are offered by a number of organizations. These services typically focus on general education, however, you can sometimes find specialty tutoring services that deal with more advanced or specialized topics. To find these free services you usually only have to look as far as your school’s website. Here you will find information about how to schedule a tutoring session, who is allowed to use the free tutoring services and when tutors are available to help you.
Public libraries also sometimes offer complimentary tutoring services. These services generally are provided by community members who are looking to earn college credits, to gain experience tutoring or to simply help out other people in their communities. Since these services are complimentary, or free, there are rules and restrictions ties to using them. For example, you may have to fill out an application, you may be limited to how many hours of tutoring you can receive or there may be age limits.
Community non-profit organizations also sometimes offer free tutoring services. Again there will be rules and restrictions that you will need to comply with in order to use the services. For example, you may be required to volunteer a certain number of hours before you can use the free tutoring services, or you may need to meet age or income restrictions.
For more information about free tutoring services, I recommend the SubTimes blog.

Over the past few months this blog has discussed a number of issues related to learning, education and tutoring. Today I’d like to talk about a new development in education, online public schools. This virtual middle and high schools are popping up across the country and currently the provide an education to over half a million children.
Virtual public schools developed because of several educational needs that were not being met by traditional public schools. Some states developed a virtual public schools because they had classrooms that were over populated and they didn’t have the funds to build more classrooms. Other states, like Florida, developed virtual public schools to offer supplemental classes to help its students either take classes to help them perform better in their regular classes or to help prepare them for college.
Currently online public schools are under fire, not because of the quality of education they are delivering, but because teachers and regular school districts are losing state funding that is being diverted to these schools. This is the same controversy that has been generated around other types of charter schools. The solution to this problem is to evaluate the effectiveness and value of online public schools to determine objectively if they are worse than, as good as or better than regular public schools, before a verdict is passed on online public schools.
While online public schools are being questioned, online tutoring is being used with success by thousands of students and professionals each year. Perhaps the success of this online learning genre can be used to help develop more effective online math lesson plans and online science lesson plans.
