Algebra is one of the intermediate math courses that kids will need to master before moving on to college. Algebra is generally introduced during 8th or 9th grade, depending on the scholastic aptitude of the student. Algebra is basically a type of math that solves for an unknown. To master Algebra students need to acquire three basic skills.
The first skill that students need to acquire is the ability to describe numbers and their relationship to other numbers and objects. For example, they will need to order numbers, determine if they are positive or negative, finite or infinite, abstract or concrete, known or unknown, etc. They will also need to know if a number is less than, equal to or greater than another number. This is the most basic Algebra skill, and it is learned in elementary school.
The next progressive skill is to learn how to complete number calculations. These calculations start out simple with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As the child progresses through their math education they learn more advanced formulas.
The final skill that will need to be acquired to be a success Algebra student is the ability to alter how they compute or calculate for a number or quantity. For example, instead of solving a problem for a well defined problem such as 1+1=2, students will need to learn how to solve problems with unknown factors such as 2x-3 = 24. They will also need to learn how to solve problems for sets of numbers.
