Last week we talked about how to use your child’s winter break to address their learning concerns. This week’s topic is single skill tutoring methods used by math tutoring services. As the name suggests, single skill tutoring methods focus on one math concept at a time.
Single skill tutoring strategies will either focus on the specific math skill that your child is having difficulties with, or they will use this teaching method to build math skills from simple skills like addition and subtraction to more complex skills like multiplication and division. The building block technique is very effective, and it is what is used in the classroom. However, when you work with a math tutor, your child gets one on one attention and the lessons can be paced according to the needs of your child.
A single skill tutoring session will generally be broken down into three parts. The first part will be a review of simpler concepts and the topics that were covered in previous tutoring sessions. If this is the first tutoring session, then the tutor will most likely try to gage where your child is at and how much they already know. The second part of the tutoring session will be the introduction of the new concept. The new concept will be related to or explained by using the simpler concepts that were just discussed. In the third part of the tutoring session the tutor will review what was learned, they will answer any questions that your child has and they will organize activities for your child to complete before their next tutoring session.
All tutoring services, whether live tutoring service or online tutoring services, are great for helping your child to reach their academic potential. However, finding a tutoring method that works with your child is going to be just as important as finding a tutor that your child like.
