When students are struggling in school a parent teacher meeting is often times called. During this meeting the teacher will explain what is going on in class, parents can discuss what is going on at home and together you work to brainstorm solutions. Before you attend one of these brainstorming sessions, it is always a good idea to prepare a list of your concerns, observations and ideas for solving the learning problem.
There are a lot of reasons why a child may be having a hard time in school. They may be dealing with problems at home, they may have a learning disability, they may be having problems seeing or hearing the teacher in class or they may be dealing with other issues that are preventing them from concentrating on their school work. What parents need to know is that a lot of kids struggle with their school work, and that it is not always just because the student isn’t trying or that their parents are not doing their jobs at home. In most cases, the problem is related to issues that can be solved.
When a parent teacher conference or meeting is called, as mentioned earlier, it is a good idea to create a list or outline of things you want to talk about. Start your list with observations that you are making at home about your child’s mood after school, how much time they are spending on their homework and what they are doing with their time after school. Next list concerns you have about your child’s school performance, i.e. grades, amount of time spending on homework, etc. Finally, start brainstorming ideas for solutions to the problems you have identified. This list will help you to maximize your time with your child’s teacher.
