Online Tutoring and Tutors
Last week we talked about how you can improve your business’ bottom line by adding language tutoring services. This week I’d like to talk about how you can increase your business’ bottom line by adding online tutoring and tutors.
When you expand your tutoring business to include an online presence, you expand your potential client base exponentially without really increasing your expenses by a large margin. The costs that you will incur to expand your business online will include costs such as domain name registration, hosting fees, website design fees, SEO fees and website design software. However, you can cut many of these costs by learning how to manage and update your website on your own and by utilize freeware.
If you already have an online tutoring service set up, then you can expand your services by hiring tutors to staff your online tutoring service. These tutors can be scheduled to take questions from students during the hours when you are either not available or that you don’t want to work. This will allow you to offer your tutoring services to potential students 24 hours a day.
To make this option profitable you will need to either presell subscriptions to your tutoring services or develop a pay schedule that will keep your costs down. For example, during non-peak hours, midnight to six in the morning, you can hire an on-call tutor who is paid a stipend to remain available to answer questions, as well as a per minute wage that will compensate them for the actual time they spend helping students.
It is hard to believe that school will be back in session in less than a month. Now is the time to make plans for tutoring services for the new school year because tutors still have slots available. For the best selection call your tutor or tutor service today.
If you aren’t sure what type of tutoring services your child will benefit from in the upcoming school year then contact your local Sylvan or other tutoring center for a free assessment. These assessments can be used to identify problem areas as well as areas of strength. Since you aren’t obligated to sign up for tutoring services after receiving the assessment, they can be a very valuable freebie.
In addition to free assessments, the end of the summer is a great time to set learning goals and objective. Goal setting sessions can be done at home, with the help of a tutor or with the help of your child’s IEP team. These goals need to identify both areas that your child wants to improve in and areas that they are just interesting in exploring. For example, a learning goal list may include things like: improve understanding of fractions, keep up with homework assignments and learn how to make slime using common household chemicals.
Education is an ongoing process that doesn’t stop when you graduate from high school or college. Like school kids, adults can also benefit from the help of a tutor. The end of the summer is a great time to talk with a tutor about picking up new professional skills, because many businesses experience a slow period during the month of August and you will have time to dedicate to learning something new.

There are a lot of different learning products that your private tutoring business can offer. Obviously private tutoring in a variety of subjects is going to be your most popular learning product, however, it doesn’t have to be your only product. You can also offer foreign language tapes, maps, textbooks, teacher guides and other reference materials to your students and customers.
If you advertise your tutoring business via a website then you might as well get the most from your website investment. One way that you can bring in more money with your website is to sell products on it in addition to promoting your tutoring services. If you don’t want to carry an inventory or if you don’t want to author your own learning guides then you can sign up for affiliate programs. Then all you have to do is place a banner ad on your website and you will earn commissions on all orders that originated from your site.
If you have a Spanish tutoring service or some other foreign language tutoring service then flash cards, vocabulary tools and grammar reference books can all be sold on your website. You can create these materials yourself or you can find a wholesale distributor to buy them through. If you decide to sell items on your website make sure you keep track of what you buy, when you buy it and how many items you sell. Also keep all receipts of your transactions to make doing your taxes easier at the end of the year.
If you’d like to look at a foreign language tutoring service blog that is currently set up, then visit Le Tutor. This blog offers great tutoring information, as well as great foreign language learning tips.

As a small business owner, tutors need to find innovative ways to find new clients. One method of attracting new clients is to start your own tutoring blog. This blog will help to direct visitors to your website, as well as spread the word about your tutoring services.
The first step in setting up your own blog is to find a blog host. If you already have a website, then you can just add a blog page to your existing website. However, if you don’t have an official website, then you can use any one of a number of free blog sites to set up your own math tutoring blog or private tutoring blog.
After you have a blog page set up you will need to figure out what topics to cover. One option that you have is to focus your topics on the course or subjects that your tutoring business works with. You can focus each blog entry on one of your tutoring services, or you can talk about upcoming tests that students need to prepare for.
The final component of your tutoring services blog is its frequency. The most effective blogs will have dependable blogs that are posted daily, weekly or monthly. The more blogs you post the better.
A good example of a blog for a tutoring services is produced by Prepoint. Visit this blog to see what one tutoring service is doing to promote their business. You can use their blog as a template for your own blog, or you can find elements that you like to add to your tutoring service blog.

Students are under a lot of pressure to perform each day of their academic careers. This pressure frequently leads many students to struggle with certain topics and concepts along the way. In most cases the student is able to work their way through the subject and advance on to the next academic challenge. However, is it better to allow a student to struggle through a challenge on their own, or is it better to help them?
The answer to the above question is not easy to answer. After all there are benefits for allowing students to work their own way through difficult academic problems, such as developing problem solving and reasoning skills, however, there are also benefits for acquiring a learning mentor to help guide the student through the process as well. Home tutoring services are a great option for talented students, average students and for students who are struggling with their coursework. These professionals will not “give” the student the answers, but will provide them with the tools to find the answers for themselves.
Online tutoring services are another option that students have. This help option is more convenient than the home tutoring or center based tutoring services because it can be accessed on demand, and in many cases school districts offer this type of service to their students for free. If you need a little extra homework help then this is the option for you.
Students of all ages occasionally need help studying, preparing for an exam or learning new skills. If you need GRE tutoring, SAT tutoring or public speaking tutoring, then seek the services of a professional tutor.

While we are still in the middle of summer, it is not too early to think about test taking season, which is just around the corner. This is the time to start putting together you LSAT tutoring promotions, recruitment flyers and tutoring materials. After all school will be starting up in less than two months and you need to leave time to get your materials to schools, learning centers, people on your mailing list and most importantly you need to leave time to design and print your materials.
SAT tutors have a lot of competition to deal with, especially if you have a tutoring center in your market. To out-compete chain tutoring services you need to design superior promotional materials and offer services that the chains don’t offer. For example you can promote your services by focusing on your willingness to come to the student instead of having to drive to a tutoring center. The key to attracting customers is to find an angle that makes your services more valuable than your competition and then promote the heck out of that angle.
If you offer GMAT tutoring services then you will want to focus your marketing materials on what you do to ensure your students pass this exam. You may want to talk about what steps you take to tutor students for this test, what materials you use or your students’ success rate. If you took this exam and did well, you may want to publicize your score. This can be a great way to attract new clients.
Do you have a promotional tip for tutoring services to use to get the word out? Post your ideas below.

Summer is not only a good time for students to pick up new skills, it is a great time for tutors to pick up new skills. Summer tends to be a little slow for tutors so it is the perfect time to expand your business and develop your professional skills. These skills can then be applied to your tutoring services repertoire and provide you with more opportunities to make money in the Fall.
The success of a tutoring business is going to be based on the quality of the services that are offered. Top tutoring businesses are going to offer tutoring programs that can be customized to meet the needs of each student, that offer tutoring programs with varying degrees of skill levels and that offer a good selection of topic availability. This summer take the time to invest in your professional development by taking classes on teaching, child development, adult learning strategies and/or on one of your most popular tutoring topics.
In addition to developing your professional skills, tutoring businesses can also use their summer downtime to expand the format of their business. You can hire and train new tutors for your company, you can develop an online tutoring business and you can also develop your Fall marketing plan. This is also a great time to start making new contacts with schools, universities, parent groups and even with local businesses.

Summer is a great time to develop new skills, especially new language skills. This summer if you are offering Spanish tutoring services or if you are being tutored in Spanish, then consider working with immersion activities. These activities will help the student to pick up accents, vocabulary and conversation skills that are hard to learn during isolated tutoring sessions.
The first immersion exercise that your tutoring services can use to teach Spanish this summer is a Spanish language field trip. Consider going to Hispanic neighborhoods and community centers where the student can hear Spanish being spoken by native speakers of this language. You can also take museum tours and ask for a Spanish language tour guide.
Another immersion activity that language tutoring and tutors can use to help their students develop language skills is to rent or buy popular movies and utilize the Spanish language settings. There are two different settings that you can work with. To start with try the Spanish subtitles. This will provide your students with the opportunity to read Spanish. Next, utilize the Spanish language dubbing setting. This will play the movie in Spanish. You may want to keep the subtitles on at the bottom of the screen to help students understand what is being said. The final option is to turn the sound off and have them read the Spanish subtitles. You can assign parts to each of your students and have fun acting out the movie.

Summer vacation is intended to be a time for kids to explore the world without the constraints of school. This means that it is the perfect time of year to address learning issues that your child has, like math. However, since kids want to have fun during their summer vacations you will need to find fun ways to get kids to practice their math skills.
Math tutoring services can help you to set up a lot of fun math activities that you can do with their kids. To start with they can show your kids how to create a budget for your family summer vacation. In this activity you will need to tell the tutor where you are going, how you will get their and how much you will be spending on hotels, food and activities. The tutor can then use this information to work with your kids on setting up a budget. Math skills that this activity deals with include: addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
Another fun summer activity that math tutoring and tutors services can offer is cooking. Cooking is a great activity to do if you kids are having a hard time understanding fractions. Since fractions seem so abstract to some learners, working with hands on projects can sometimes make them make more sense. Math skills that this activity deals with include: measuring, learning fractions, adding fractions and multiplying fractions.

If you offer professional tutoring services then you need to always be on the look out for ways to help your students to develop their academic skills. One of my favorite skill development exercises is the writing journal. Journals can be kept on a number of subjects from English to Social Studies. Journaling exercises also range in types from timed writings to daily entries.
Timed writings are great for home tutoring sessions in a variety of subjects. They can be used to develop English language or foreign language skills, as well as to develop information recall from previous tutoring sessions. When structuring your timed writing you will want to set the time limit to between five and fifteen minutes and provide your students with a topic. Your topic selection can be specific, such as “what sparked World War II?” Your topic selection can also be general, such as “write about your summer vacation.”
If you specialize in a specific topic, such as Spanish tutoring, then journaling exercises will need to focus on specific skills, pieces of information or topics. For example, one journaling exercise that is appropriate for Spanish tutoring sessions is to have the student write an entry using the vocabulary words that you are focusing on that week. You can also have the students write on cultural topics related to the foreign language being studied. These exercises are intended to provide students with opportunities to utilize the language skills that they are learning and to deepen their understanding of the cultures behind the language.
Do you have a recommendation for a learning exercise or journaling topic? Post your responses below.

Over the last couple of weeks I have talked about using a tutoring service to solve academic problems. Today I would like to talk about how adults can also use professional tutoring services to improve their competitive edge. The two skills areas that this blog will focus on are professional language skills and computer skills.
Private tutoring services can help professionals develop language skills that will make them a more valuable employee or employee candidate. Language skills that a tutor can help you to develop include communication skills, public speaking skills and foreign language skills. Using a Spanish tutoring service, for example, can not only provide you with more career options, but it can also help you to qualify for a higher salary.
In addition to language skill develop, professionals can also advance their careers, or change career fields by learning new computer skills. Computer skills include programming, spreadsheet development and use, database utilization and development and specific software ware proficiency. Tutors can help you to break down the components of each skill and teach them to you in easy bite size pieces. You can use the skills that your computer tutors teach you to get special certifications, to advance your career or to even switch career fields.
Investing in tutoring services is a smart move, especially if you are trying to break into a new phase of your career or a new job market. Are you wondering if your career could benefit from a tutor? Do you have questions about what type of tutoring services you will benefit from the most? If so post your questions and I’ll respond to them ASAP.
