School is now back in session. This is the perfect time to think about an after school job. If you are a student who is patient, academically gifted and who is looking for an after school job, then consider starting a tutoring service. Tutoring services offered by students can be very lucrative businesses to run, and they can net you a much larger hourly rate then working fast food restaurants.
To set up your student tutoring service you will first need to figure out what subjects and grades you are qualified to tutor. Look at your areas of strength and focus on those areas. Then talk with your guidance counselor about what they think you are the most qualified to tutor. This meeting will have two objectives, (1) to find a focus for your business and (2) to generate word of mouth advertising for your business. After you talk to your guidance counselor they may recommend your services to parents looking for a tutor for their students.
To gain some experience, you may want to volunteer your tutoring services for a semester. During this semester you can learn how to break down a topic, how to work with students and how the tutoring process works. You can then use this experience to get paying jobs during the second part of the school year. You can expect to make between $10 and $20 an hour as a student tutor. The amount of money that you receive is going to depend a lot on where you live and what your market will support.

What do you think the best grade to tutor is? I am currently TA’ing for 4th grade reading, and would love to tutor, but don’t know if I should venture to a different age group.

Tutoring can be a great extra income that you dictate on your own. You can set your own hours and dictate how many students you can handle, that’s what makes it so great.
