Last week we talked about questions you need to ask potential tutors to determine if they are right for you. This week I’d like to continue this discussion and talk about a few more questions that you can ask a potential tutor or tutoring service. These questions will help you to narrow down your tutoring options.
Question No. 1: Where do you offer your tutoring services?
This question is designed to determine if you have to go to your tutor or if they will come to you. Tutors that work in a tutoring center, from their home or from an office have some advantages. For example, they have a work station that is set up for easy learning and they have access to all of their tutoring supplies. However, for many students the tutor’s willingness to come to them is very important, especially for students that have disabilities that make mobility or new environments difficult to handle.
Question No. 2: How much do you charge?
This is another important question to ask a potential tutor or tutoring service. This question needs to be asked so you can determine if you can afford the tutor’s services. Tutoring services can range anywhere from $20 an hour to over $100 an hour, depending on the subject and the tutor. Travel charges may also be assessed.
Question No. 3: Do you offer test prep services?
If you are getting ready to take a big test, such as the SATs or the ACTs, then this is an important question to ask. Usually you will need to use a test prep specialist if you want a tutor to help you prepare for one of these tests.
