test preparation tutoring
While we are still in the middle of summer, it is not too early to think about test taking season, which is just around the corner. This is the time to start putting together you LSAT tutoring promotions, recruitment flyers and tutoring materials. After all school will be starting up in less than two months and you need to leave time to get your materials to schools, learning centers, people on your mailing list and most importantly you need to leave time to design and print your materials.
SAT tutors have a lot of competition to deal with, especially if you have a tutoring center in your market. To out-compete chain tutoring services you need to design superior promotional materials and offer services that the chains don’t offer. For example you can promote your services by focusing on your willingness to come to the student instead of having to drive to a tutoring center. The key to attracting customers is to find an angle that makes your services more valuable than your competition and then promote the heck out of that angle.
If you offer GMAT tutoring services then you will want to focus your marketing materials on what you do to ensure your students pass this exam. You may want to talk about what steps you take to tutor students for this test, what materials you use or your students’ success rate. If you took this exam and did well, you may want to publicize your score. This can be a great way to attract new clients.
Do you have a promotional tip for tutoring services to use to get the word out? Post your ideas below.

Last week I talked about the multi skill tutoring techniques used by test preparation tutors. This week I would like to talk about the upcoming testing season. If you are in high school, or if you are a parent of a high school student, then this blog is for you.
The first major academic test that you need to take is the PSAT. This is basically a practice exam for the SATs and the ACTs. This test is usually recommended for Sophomores, as they will be taking the SATs and ACTs during their Junior and Senior Year. The dates for PSAT test dates for 2008 will be announced next year. As soon as the dates are announced, you will want to sign up for a time slot as spaces are limited.
The next major academic test that you will need to take is the SAT. This exam is used by colleges to determine eligibility for admissions. The better you do on your SAT the better your chances will be for scholarships and acceptance to the college of your choice. It is a good idea to take this exam while in your Junior year so you have time to retake it if needed. The 2008 dates for the SAT are January 26, March 1, May 3 and June 7.
There is not a lot of time left to prepare for testing season. Because of this you may want to use a home tutoring service and online tutoring service or a professional tutoring service that specializes in the test that you need to take. Next week’s topic will be on preparing for the CPA exam.

Last week’s topic was single skill tutoring. This week I am moving on to multi skill tutoring. Multi skill tutoring is usually offered by test prep tutors who need to cover a variety of skills that the student will need to past the academic or professional test they are signed up for. These tutors tend to focus on preparing students for the LSAT, SAT, ACT, the CPA exam or the BAR exam.
Major academic exams such as the LSAT, SAT and ACT, require a variety of skill competencies in order to pass. Students will need to understand how to apply math skills, reading skills and composition skills to a variety of tasks in order to do well on these tests. When you work with a test tutor they will address each of the skill sets that you need to develop in order to pass the exam you are signed up for. They will then break down each skill into smaller parts to make learning them easier to do. Finally, they will run you through practice exams to help you learn the format.
If you are ready for a professional exam like the CPA exam or the Bar exam, then a testing tutor is going to break down the various modules used by the exam. They will show you various memorization techniques, they will run you through mock practicums and they will run you through several pre-tests. If you are having a hard time with a particular module, then you can request extra help in this section.
Multi-skill tutoring is generally not offer through at home tutoring services. However, online tutoring services can provide you with at home assistance while you are studying on your own. Next week’s tutoring services blog topic will be preparing for the upcoming testing season.
