Tutoring Businesses and Year End Problems

Tips for Tutoring Businesses
Year End Planning

There are a lot of issues that tutoring businesses need to address in December of each year. These issues range from how to increase business to end of the year tax planning. Fortunately, there are simple ways to address these issues so that your tutoring business will be successful in the New Year.

The first issue that a lot of tutoring services have to deal with at this time of the year is a light work load. Many students are planning family vacations over their winter breaks and are putting their tutoring sessions on hold. Budgets are also tight at this time of the year as people try to manage both their regular expenses and extra holiday expenses. In order to overcome these problems you can stir up new business by promoting the sales of tutoring gift certificates. This way you can tap gift money that has been put aside for December expenditures.

Another big issue that tutoring businesses have to deal with in December is their year end tax planning. There are strategies that businesses can take to lower their tax liability. For example, they can pay their January bills by December 30 so that they count towards the 2008 tax season. If you are expecting a large payment at the end of the month and are already facing a big tax bill for 2008, then consider asking your clients to pay you on January 1 instead of the last week of December. This will add revenue to your 2009 tax year and keep this year’s taxable income down.
